Every woman has a breast
story. Telling these stories fosters discussion about
remarkable experiences. Whether it’s breast
feeding or breast cancer, breast augmentation or reduction,
women define their femininity or personal and sexual power
through their breasts. Breast size and shape can
play a huge role in a woman’s self-image.
When women tell their breast stories, they reclaim a subject
that has for decades been expressed and defined by a male
dominated advertising and mass media industry.
The film is a series of stories told by women from diverse
ethnic backgrounds who range in age from 22 to 83.
In 2006 the film won a Bronze Telly and an Aurora Gold
Award.
Filmmaker Kathy Kiefer:
“Consider the outcome of Janet Jackson’s ‘wardrobe
malfunction.’ Who decides what breasts symbolize
in our society? Are breasts considered obscene,
erotic or taboo? Why is it that in some places in
this country women are not allowed to breast feed their
babies in public? Who decides what the ideal breast
size is? How is this communicated to young women?
When women share breast stories they reclaim their right
to define the meaning of breasts in our world. My goal
was to produce a film that would invite discussion about
breasts.”
